Is the car new or used? Depending on whether it's new or used, the approach would be different. With new cars, you would have to do some research upfront to find out about rebates and what most people buy the car for. With used cars, its not as clean cut, so you would need to find out what the going price for that particular car is. A good place to start is by getting all the details of the car and using kbb.com or Edmunds.com to see what the sale price range is. You should also find a mechanic that would be willing to go and inspect the car for you to make sure its free of serious problems. Also, remember that the sale price doesn't include taxes and fees, so you would need to take those into account during your negotiations. The best thing to do is to be prepared and watch out for the finance guy, they get creative with the math sometimes and like to sell you a lot of useless stuff. Oh lastly, if you bring a friend, make sure your friend knows what he/she is doing and have one person negotiate.HELP ME PLEASE~ young girl needs car buying advice?
I hate to say it, but the only thing to do would be to take your father or some other older male with you. Not only could you get ripped, you might not get taken seriously either. I know that sucks, but look at it from a salesmans position; here is a young girl, barely of an age to buy a car by herself. The current economy dictates that unless for some reason you have cash, there is no way you are going to be able to buy this car on credit alone. So, he talks to the pretty little blonde, just to pass some time. I seriously doubt he is going to think he is getting a sale out of it. Sorry, just the way it works I guess. Good luck.
I would ask someone more knowleadgeable in cars to go with you to the dealership. Dealers love uneducated consumers and will definitely try to up the price.

Lesson #1: Never accept dealer price, it is always negotiable

Lesson #2: Do not buy all those extras Finance manager tries to sell you (additional coverage, tire care, etc...)
